ACTION ALERT: Want To Make LA More Likable/Bikeable? LA Officials Are Listening, But Need To Hear From You!

The entire future of LA seems to be being planned without input from those who want a more bikeable/walkable Los Angeles!

Los Angeles is updating it’s General Plan for the first time in decades.

OurLA2040, organized by LA’s Department of City Planning, “aims to chart the course for how our city will grow and change over time and will cover topics such as land use and economic development, water and energy conservation, parks and open space, air quality, historic preservation, public facilities and community assets.”

So they have organized several brainstorming sessions for the public to give input about LA’s Open Spaces and Communities.

HOW THE FIRST MEETING SHOCKED US

Even knowing the stereotype of public city meetings, we were shocked on several levels:

First, at how few people actually attended this extremely important public-input session which will lead to decades of changes affecting millions of Angelinos.

Second, at the utter lack of young people present giving input to officials whose decisions will impact them the most.

Third, when considering Open Spaces and Community, how little discussion there was about making LA healthier and more vibrant by making it more bikeable and walkable and the utter lack of conversation about obvious elephant in the room, the utter dominance of cars in LA.

THE GOOD NEWS: CHANGE DOESN’T TAKE MUCH

The last thing that shocked us at this first brainstorming session was how utterly easy it seemed to positively influence its tone and content.

There were about 30-40 folks at this first session and we broke up into small groups to give our thoughts and ideas about Open Spaces and Community while city officials took notes and moderated. So all it would take to influence the conversation in a positive direction would be just one or two people in each group making sure the basics of healthy city life, biking and walking, are represented.

If we want to Los Angeles to adopt 21st-century goals for healthier Open Spaces and more vibrant Communities, then we should make our voices heard, particularly when city officials are listening!

The Department of City Planning will be taking the discussion points brought up at these sessions and use them to begin putting together a plan to update LA’s, General Plan.

So let’s make sure that city officials take into consideration non-car modes of transportation like biking and walking and making LA a healthier, less polluted, walkable/bikeable city!

Especially after the amazing CicLAvia over the weekend that utterly transformed Downtown, we need to make sure the future that city officials will be planing is the future all of us deserve!
