What makes the Dualtron Ultra Exceptional

An Overview of the Dualtron Ultra:

Around the world, Dualtron commands the highest reputation for their Electric Scooters, in part because they’ve been making Electric Scooters since 1999:

  • Superior Grade Battery Pack: the Li-poly packs in the SW IV & Mini4 provide tremendous value-for-money for range & power, but can be let down by poor reliability & a higher degradation curve over time. In contrast, the LG Li-ion cells on the Dualtrons have absolute consistency across the millions of cells that roll off the production line.  For you, the Customer, this means that there will be less worry & concern about the capability of your expensive investment, not only during the warranty period, but through the several years of your scooter’s expected useful life. The battery pack is composed of 168x LG MH1 battery cells, configured in 16s10p (16 cells in series & 10 parallels), for a total capacity of 1,920Wh.
  • Powerful Motors: this is really the main selling point of the Dualtrons; on the Ultra, there are 2x 1200W motors that assist the scooter to climb nearly any gradient you’re ever likely to encounter. Because the two motors on the Ultra are working in concert, there is less strain, with accompanying overheating during your journey.
  • Larger 11″ x 3.9″ Tires: the Dualtron Ultra is fitted with massive 11″ x 3.9″ air tires to help channel the enormous power of the motors onto the road.
  • Front/Rear Disc Brakes: one of the main weaknesses of the Mini4 is it’s single rear-drum brake, that requires periodic adjusting to give you a  decent stopping distance; it can be supplemented by the regenerative system, but has the fundamental limitation of relying on the traction of the single rear Wheel. On the Dualtron Ultra, braking is in a completely different class, essential for bringing a scooter traveling at nearly 50mph to a safe short stopping distance. Even if there were no regenerative system, the front/rear discs have 3-4x the stopping power of the drum brake on the Mini4. The calibers are also more accessible across the Dualtron line, facilitating relative easy brake pad changes.
  • Better Suspension: the Dualtron Ultra has the double torsion-bar & rubber-block absorption setup with up to 5″ of travel; this compares with the SW IV with front springs & adjustable dual air shock-absorbers mounted on the back; there is no front suspension on the Mini4.
  • Improved Folding Mechanism: folding/unfolding the latch mechanism on the Mini4 requires a specific sequence of, 1) applying the brake lever to relieve weight on the latch, 2) pushing down with your heel on the lever, 3) then pulling back to close the handle, it can be a challenge initially… The handle collapsing mechanism on the Dualtron can be done with one hand, it is practically fool-proof.
  • Easier Maintenance: changing a tire is designed to be simpler; by unfastening a couple screws on the Wheels, the tire assembly can easily slide out.

Dualtron Ultra Features at a Glance:

Overview of the Features on the Dualtron II
Organizational chart between Speedway, Minimotors & Dualtron

Background of Minimotors, Dualtron & Speedway:

Electric kick-scooters have existed in one form or another for well over a two decades. Until relatively recently, electric scooters were powered by extremely heavy lead-acid batteries, limiting their range, power & usefulness. Advances in battery energy density, electronics & motor design are creating a quiet revolution, which we’re starting to witness take a dramatic impact in those cities that are rolling out Scooter sharing programs. While electric scooters are beginning to gain traction in the US, in other countries, like Korea, the sight of people using Electric Scooters to get about quickly & efficiently is now a commonplace sight.

Dualtron/Speedway—a division of Minimotors—have been making advanced state-of-the-art scooter designs since 1999. In the performance class, there is no serious equivalent contender in this space; Dualtron are the globally recognized as being the unrivaled market leader, with a reputation for quality & blistering performance across all their Electric kick-scooter range.

Minimotors, the parent Company, designs the scooters from their Korean offices. They are also concerned with all aspects of the R&D & most of the parts production—nearly everything is produced in-house, including controller, dashboard, frame, molding, handlebars, even the motors. Speedway & Dualtron Scooters are differentiated by the performance class of scooter they make, & the types of battery packs that are used. In a high-performance Scooter, these larger >750Wh batteries constitute more than half of the input costs of the finished product; to keep the Speedway scooter costs down, these use the cheaper Lithium polymer packs, that have a higher probability of failure & degradation over time. On the Dualtron line, premium grade LG Li-ion cells are selected for greater reliability & predictable performance.

Control Features Functionality

The Dualtron Dashboard offers a concise easy to read layout of all the essential information you need for your journey, displaying: current speed, battery level, running time, odometer & the current power mode. Being backlit, it’s also completely readable while riding in low light conditions.

ULTRA Upgraded Suspension

Dualtron Ultra Tire Choice: Road or Chunky Off-road types
A Closer view of the Dualtron ULTRA Suspension

Based on Customer feedback, our Dualtron Ultras will be fitted with the smoother road-tires providing superior comfort on paved surfaces & trails. What makes the Ultra tires exceptional for an eScooter, is not tire diameter—this is only a 1″ larger than that found on the Dualtron II—but the massive 3.9″ width, compared to 2.5″ on the DII, giving the ride a lot more stability, grip under moist condition, & traction imparted from the motors to the road surface.

eWheels will also be providing the off-road chunky tires through our parts stores, if you wish to use your Ultra predominately on gravel or dirt paths.

This latest generation of the Ultra is fitted with a more durable suspension than the early version; there is now an independent absorbing rubber blocks on each side of the torsion bars; this design offers up to 5″ of clearance to absorb some of the most punishing road surfaces.

Overtime, the absorption blocks will degrade & be in need replacing, these will be available from our eWheels parts department.

ULTRA Electronics Cooling:

Micro-switches (MOSFETs) that power the motors are not perfectly efficient, with each switching operation a small amount of parasitic heat is generated. Under normal operation, this doesn’t usually present a problem, but as the power demands increase, around 1-3% of this energy is converted to heat, owing to electrical resistance. At the peak sustained power of 2,400 watts, this could be as high as 75 watts. Without some way to extract this energy, the temperature will continue to increase to the point where it will do damage to the sensitive control-board.

The Ultra is fitted with a large heat-sink metal plate mounted underneath the frame, that takes advantage of the passing air to cool the control-board as you ride.

Comparative Advantages & Disadvantages

Advantages:

  • Range & Speed Advantage: with identical core components to the Dualtron Thunder, the Ultra offers the absolute top performance specification, with a cruising range of up to 80+ miles & a maximum speed reaching up to 50MPH.
  • Value for money: if you do not require the bells-and-whistles of the Thunder—such as the ABS brakes, multiple levels of suspension, atmospheric LED lighting, fingerprint scanner—the Ultra costs $550 less than the Thunder, offering superior value for money on a raw capability basis.
  • Weight Advantage: even with the 1,920Wh battery pack, 11 x 3.9″ wide tires, the Ultra weighs in at 81.4lb; comparatively, the same performance package on the Thunder is 13.4lb more.
  • Durability & Quality: the material stresses that a high performance Electric Scooter are subjected to are immense. The Ultra is a tried & tested product, racking up millions of cumulative miles from Riders around the world. While there are certain joints & components that have a limited lifespan, with the right care, the Ultra should last for well over ten years, potentially reaching 100,000 miles of operating life.

Disadvantages:

  • Disc brakes are not the best: to bring a 81.4lb scooter, with its Rider, from a high cruising speed to an abrupt stop requires a tremendous amount of stopping power. On the Ultra, the physical disc brakes need to be backed up by the regenerative system to achieve a safe stopping distance. Furthermore, the mechanical brakes should be periodically inspected & adjusted, removing excess slack in the brake cable & changing the brake pads when necessary.
  • Lighter than the Thunder, but still very heavy: if you’re planning on purchasing the Ultra to commute with, & this involves a flight (or more) of stairs, for most individuals, the Scooter is probably too heavy for this scenario.
  • Securing/locking the Scooter: while the Ultra can be physically secured with a cable lock or chain, without some aftermarket solution, there is nothing to prevent someone from powering on the Dashboard & pulling the throttle. Keeping in mind, that unlike the Thunder, it is not really designed to be left unattended outside.

Frequently Asked Questions:

  • Is this $3,291 price inclusive of all taxes & duties?
Yes. As of August 23rd, 2018, all Personal Electric Transportation products produced from China are now subject to the 25% tariff at import.
  • Is the ULTRA water-resistant, can I use it in the rain?
The Manufacturer’s recommendation is that you try to avoid excessively wet conditions, puddles & standing water. During assembly, the factory has sealed up the entry points to the battery compartment, etc; however, if it is very wet, water may find its way into the sensitive interior, resulting in water related damage.
  • What are the advantages/disadvantages between the DII & the ULTRA?
If you’re seeking the Ultimate performing Electric Scooter, then the ULTRA is as it’s name suggests. In comparing the Ultra to the DII, the former possesses 50% higher peak power, a 56% larger battery pack, enormous 11″ x 3.9″ tires for superior traction & ride comfort, & a 10MPH faster top speed. These enhanced capabilities come at the price of a 20lb higher weight (81.4lb total), which may make it difficult to lift from the trunk of a car, & highly impractical, for most people, to consider taking it aboard a train or other form of public transport. The Ultra also commands a $1,000 higher price than the DII EX.
  • Will it be worth waiting for the Dualtron Thunder, the next generation ULTRA? When will these be available to buy?
For the same speed & similar range specifications, the Thunder costs $560 more. The Scooter’s weight has increased from an already hefty 81.4lb, to a portly 95.3lb! Upcoming capabilities to be found on the new Thunder series will include:

    1. Multiple adjustable suspension levels vs. fixed suspension on the Ultra
    2. Front/rear hydraulic caliper brakes
    3. LED handle post light, under-deck mood lighting
    4. ABS brakes
  • What are the folded dimensions of the ULTRA?
When the the handle-bar is folded down, the dimensions are 47.4″ long  x 24″ wide x 20.2″ high, the same as in the unfolded position but reduced height. Because of hefty weight of the Ultra, the handle should not be used to pick up the Scooter!
  • Is it possible to choose between the road & off-road tires when purchasing?
Yes, we will be receiving Ultras with both the on-road & off-road tires fitted from the factory. The default option is the on-road tires, but if you prefer the off-road tires, please let us know at the time of ordering. Either set can be purchased separately for $95 including shipping.
  • How many charge/discharge cycles can one expect from the battery pack?
This depends on many different factors: the weight of the Rider(s), high usage of regenerative braking, frequent riding on hills, how hard it’s driven, weather conditions (freezing temperatures are not ideal for Li-ion batteries), & most importantly, the end-point charging voltage. If you use the 5A fast-charger & set the termination point to 80%, this single action alone can extend the lifespan of the battery by up to 4-5 times! The other benefit of partial charging, is that it lowers the risk of degrading your battery pack through the use of regenerative braking on a full charge.
  • Will you be offering spare parts? What spares will I expect to need over time?
Yes, part of being a ‘full service’ Company is that we offer the largest selection of spare parts for all our products. You will be able to find a list of available parts through our online store https://www.ewheels.com/product-category/Dualtron
  • Is there a seat available for Dualtron line?
Yes, the seat bolts into the back of the deck platform & can be purchased separately for $140 including free shipping.
  • What type of warranty is there on the Dualtron?
We offer a one year warranty for the parts & labour. It does not include shipping costs, which may be between $100-$190 (within the US), depending on the distance from our repair center in Tucson, AZ. While other dealers of Electric Scooters typically only offer a 3-6 warranty for the battery pack, we stand by all our products with a full one year warranty. Exclusions to the warranty are wear-and-tear & improper use, please refer to our warranty page for the full terms & conditions.
