Why the Speedway III Might the Right eScooter for You

Comparing the Speedway III to the Mini4:

Since first offering the Speedway Mini4, from September last year, it has gone through several iterations of improvement, with demand constantly outstripping the available supply. We had held back on increasing the volume of the Mini4 until there was absolutely confidence that all of the issues had been worked out. The next step up from the Mini4 was the SW IV, although it had a lot more to offer, is more depending/reliable, but at double the price there was a market gap for a more economical version of this tried & proven platform, that has now being fulfilled by the SW III:

  • More Powerful Motor: this motor is rated for 20% more sustained power than the Mini4 & up to 60% more peak power (1600W max) to meet the needs of extreme acceleration, or hill climbing.
  • Larger 10″ Wheels: the SW III has 10″ diameter & 2.5″ wide air tires on both the front & rear Wheels; this compares with the Mini4 that has 8″x 2″ sold tires.
  • Front/Rear Disc Brakes: the front & rear disc brakes on the SW III/IV provide it an advantage to the Mini4’s single rear drum brake for stopping force. Also, thanks to the more powerful motor, the complementary regenerative braking system of the motor assists the bring the scooter to a rapid stop.
  • Easier Maintenance: changing a tire has been simplified; by unfastening a couple screws on the Wheel, the tire assembly easily slides out.
  • Better Ride Quality:  the SW’s III longer deck, front spring suspension, & larger air tires all contribute to make the SW series scooter a less fatiguing ride over long distances.
  • Improved Folding Mechanism: folding/unfolding the latch mechanism on the Mini4 requires a specific sequence of, 1)  applying the brake lever to relieve weight on the latch, 2) pushing down with your heal on the lever, 3) then pulling back to close the handle, it can be challenge initially… The folding mechanism on the SW series has been completely redesigned to make it practically fool-proof, with no forward/back play in the handlebar.
  • Front Headlight, Turn Signals & Horn: uniquely on the Dualtron/Speedway Scooters, the SW III/IV has a front headlight that’s feed off the main battery. On the reverse, when you apply the brake lever, a series of LEDs on the rear bumper alerts traffic behind that you’ll be slowing down. You also have a rear set of left-right of indicator lights. On the same control area is a horn button.

Comparing the Differences Between the Speedway III & IV

This particular specification of the Speedway III was created for eWheels to fit in between the Mini4 Pro & the Speedway IV. The key requirements which we felt were most import to our Customers, were 1) an effective range of between 25-30 miles, 2) highly reliable & low maintenance, 3) net weight under 45lb, 4) priced below $1000. To meet these ends, the SW III was selected with a custom battery pack to meet these objectives.

Front Lighting:

While the SW III has a mounted front headlight attached to the handle-bar stem, it does not have the integrated deck running lights which the SW IV has. The main advantage to these is the cool visual effect, rather than providing a suitable amount of lighting for riding in low light conditions.

Speedway 3 vs Speedway 4 Differences: Side Views

Rear Shock Suspension:

The primary enhancement when the SW IV was released were the adjustable rear shocks. These make the SW IV more effective over extremely rough terrain, providing a smoother, less jarring ride. Although the SW III lacks this rear suspension, the front sprung suspension & inflatable air tires do a reasonably decent job at dampening most of the imperfections on a daily commute. The general ride experience is a big step up from the Mini4 & other small diameter  eScooters.

Rear Braking Lights & Turning Signals:

At the back of Scooter the visual differences between the two models is most apparent: the turn signals on the SW III are placed on either side of the brake light, while the IVs are placed further up front, at the tail-end of the running boards, making them visible from an oblique angle—the indicators on the III are visible only directly behind, which make sense.

The Benefits of the LG Li-ion Battery Pack

Battery Lithium Ion vs Lithium Polymer

Across the Speedway/Dualtron product line, the battery pack represents more than half of the production costs of the finished eScooter; therefore, what type of battery is selected for a particular model, is one of the most important decisions the Manufacturer-Distributor has to make.

Until now, all the Speedway Electric Scooters were fitted with a Lithium Polymer battery from a reputable Chinese manufacturer; however, from our experience with selling several hundred of Mini4s, it has been found that the battery defect rate averages about 8%, on an annualized basis—majority were out-of-box defects. There are some benefits of this technology, like a lower Wh/$$ cost & higher volumetric/weight densities.

In our continuous efforts to provide our Customers with the best possible purchase value, reduced downtime, & the greatest product longevity, we are extremely pleased to announce an agreement Speedway to fit a tried & tested Li-ion battery across the Speedway product line, including the Mini4, Speedway IV, & now with the introduction of the Speedway III as well.

The primary benefit to this LG Li-ion pack are: predicted to yield a 20% improvement on degradation (based on manufacturer cell cycle data), improved safety, robustness, & can be repurposed at the end of the Scooter’s useful life—there is a strong secondary market for this type of battery. This pack is composed of the LG MH1 3.2Ah cell, configured as 14S4P—14 cells in series & 4 parallel—for a total of 56 cells in the pack.

Organizational chart between Speedway, Minimotors & Dualtron

Minimotors Background: Dualtron & Speedway

Electric kick-scooters have existed in one form or another for well over a two decades. Until relatively recently, electric scooters were powered by extremely heavy lead-acid batteries, limiting their range, power & usefulness. Advances in battery energy density, electronics & motor design are creating a quiet revolution, which we’re starting to witness take a dramatic impact in those cities that are rolling out Scooter sharing programs. While electric scooters are beginning to gain traction in the US, in other countries, like Korea, the sight of people using Electric Scooters to get about quickly & efficiently is now a commonplace sight.

Dualtron/Speedway—a division of Minimotors—have been making advanced state-of-the-art scooter designs since 1999. In the performance class, there is no serious equivalent contender in this space; Dualtron are the globally recognized as being the unrivaled market leader, with a reputation for quality & blistering performance across all their Electric kick-scooter range.

Minimotors, the parent Company, designs the scooters from their Korean offices. They are also concerned with all aspects of the R&D & most of the parts production—nearly everything is produced in-house, including controller, dashboard, frame, molding, handlebars, even the motors. Speedway & Dualtron Scooters are differentiated by the performance class of scooter they make, & the types of battery packs that are used. In a high-performance Scooter, these larger >500Wh batteries constitute more than half of the input costs of the finished product; in order to keep the Speedway scooter costs down, these had used the cheaper Lithium polymer packs, that have a higher probability of failure & degradation over time—[Note: as of June 10th, Speedway Scooters sold through eWheels.com will also be fitted with Li-on batteries] On the Dualtron line, premium grade LG Li-ion cells are selected for greater reliability & predictable performance.

The Optional Seat:

An optional seat can be fitted onto the foot-board, allowing you to rest your legs for those long rides. All it takes to install is a regular screwdriver & requires about 1-2 minutes. The seat will be sold separately for $100.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • How does one go about deciding between the Mini4 & Speedway III/IV?
Each model has different strengths, we’ve attempting to rationalize the Speedway/Dualtron model line so that there is minimal capability & price overlap between them. If you’re looking for the most compact higher-performance Scooters, then the Mini4 is a good choice, the downsides are that it has proven to be higher maintenance than the Speedway III-IV series. The slightly larger Speedway III has an improved folding mechanism, larger tires & is generally more solid, but this comes at a 6lb higher weight penalty over the Mini4. As outlined in the above ‘Comparing the Differences’ section, the SW IV has several important improvements & a battery pack that’s twice the size of SW III.
  • Is the Speedway III water-resistant, can I use it in the rain?
The Manufacturer’s recommendation is that you try to avoid excessively wet conditions, puddles & standing water. During assembly, the factory has sealed up the entry points to the battery compartment, etc; however, if it is very wet, water may find its way into the sensitive interior, resulting in water related damage. You should wipe the Scooter down with a towel if it gets wet.
  • How many charge/discharge cycles can one expect from the battery pack?
This depends on many different factors: the weight of the Rider(s), high usage of regenerative braking, frequent riding on hills, how hard it’s driven, weather conditions (freezing temperatures are not good for batteries), & most importantly, the end-point charging voltage. If you use the 5A fast-charger & set the termination point to 80%, this single action alone can extend the lifespan of the battery by up to 4-5 times! The other benefit of partial charging, is that it lowers the risk of degrading your battery pack through the use of regenerative braking on a full charge.
  • Will you be offering spare parts? What spares will I expect to need over time?
Yes, part of being a ‘full service’ Company is that we offer the largest selection of spare parts for all our products. You will be able to find a list of available parts through our online store https://www.ewheels.com/product-category/parts-speedway/
  • What is the Warranty this is included on this Scooter?
We offer a one year warranty for the parts & labour. It does not include shipping costs, which may be between $40-$130 (within the US), depending on the distance from our repair center in Tucson, AZ. While other dealers of Electric Scooters typically only offer a 3-6 warranty for the battery pack, we stand by all our products with a full one year warranty. Exclusions to the warranty are wear-and-tear & improper use, please refer to our warranty page for the full terms & conditions.
